Concessive Clauses

 Concessive clauses   What is a concessive clause?  A concessive clause is a subordinate clause that refers to a situation that contrasts with the one described in the main clause.  A number of different conjunctions can be used in front of the concession clause such as:  although, even though, though, much as, while, whereas, even if, and prepositions such as despite and in spite of.  Much as and whereas are less commonly used and occur mainly in formal written English.  Sentence order  1.- We start with the main clause followed by a concessive conjunction and a concessive clause (we don’t use a comma here).  Main clause + concessive conjunction + concessive clause.  Example: He refused to buy a new car   although   he had enough money.  2.- We can also start with a concessive conjunction followed by a concessive clause, a comma, and the main clause.
